Yancey Kemp Wise, 71, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2014. Her Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Seacoast Church Chapel located at 750 Long Point Road, Mount Pleasant, SC. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. Yancey was born January 29, 1943 in Hartsville, South Carolina, daughter of the late Henry Overton Kemp and Dorothea Crouch Kemp. Yancey graduated from The University of South Carolina with a B.A. in 1964 and later received her Master of Social Work in 1981. She was also a long time Member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). While serving NAMI, she received national and state awards including the Best Recovery Person of the Year in 2011 and the Best Stigma Buster Award in 2013. She also served as a mentor to children in the North Charleston area through the Communities in Schools Program. Yancey was a member of Seacoast Church.
Yancey lived to love, laugh and care for others. Throughout her life, her sons, Timothy and David, were her passion and joy. She thoroughly enjoyed her boys - playing, encouraging and teaching them through their childhood into manhood. She also loved to spend time with her four grandchildren who all lived nearby. In her career as a social worker, she specialized in addiction and family therapy utilizing her gifts of communication and counseling. Yancey was always open to helping anyone in need. She also enjoyed her friends staying active with them throughout her entire life in her church and her community. To her friends and family, she was known as someone of compassion, love and enduring faith.
She is survived by her longtime companion, Russell Carr of Charleston, and her sons, Timothy Wise and his wife, Kristy of Mount Pleasant, SC, and David Wise of Mount Pleasant, SC; and her grandchildren, Mason, John, Hannah, and Katlin Wise.
