Woodrow Lee Holbein, 81, husband of Martha Wendolyn "Winnie" Holbein of Mt. Pleasant, SC passed away on Thursday, November 4, 2010. The relatives and friends of Woody are invited to attend his Funeral Service on Monday, November 8, 2010 in J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens. Mr. Holbein was born on January 1, 1929 in Gallipolis, Ohio to the late Frederick Holbein and Lorena Holbein Erwin. He was the nephew of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Cochran of Portsmouth, Ohio. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served three years before entering college. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Baldwin-Wallace College, his graduate degree from Western Reserve University, and furthered his education at the University of South Carolina. Before coming to The Citadel, Woody taught at Marshall College in Huntington, WV and Bethany College in Bethany, WV. He taught at The Citadel from 1957-1998. While there he inaugurated the Citadel Fine Arts Series and served as chairman for many years. He was also chairman of the Faculty Council for 2 terms. Two things made Woody laugh: obituaries and Andy Capp. He loved to read, watch old movies and follow sports. He appreciated a fine bottle of scotch and enjoyed traveling with Winnie. Woody delighted in listening to western, Broadway and classical music on his way to Marble Slab for weekly ice cream dates with his granddaughter. When his grandsons came to visit, a sporting event or movie was a given. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Winnie Holbein of Mt. Pleasant, SC; two daughters, Beth Ritchey and her husband, John, of Fayetteville, GA and Jessica McQuatters of Mt. Pleasant, SC; grandchildren, Tradd Ritchey at Georgia Tech, Miles Ritchey of Fayetteville, GA and Lauren McQuatters of Mt. Pleasant, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Baldwin-Wallace College, 275 Eastland Road, Berea, Ohio 44017 or to your favorite charity. And if you're wondering, it was cancer.
