William Richard Kirkland, born on May 14, 1942, passed away peacefully in Florence, South Carolina, on April 28, 2026, just weeks shy of his 84th birthday. Richard’s life was marked by a profound dedication to excellence, an enduring commitment to his family, and a steadfast devotion to his community and craft.
Richard’s journey began with a strong foundation at the College of Charleston in 1962-1963, followed by an intense four-year welding apprenticeship that honed his remarkable technical abilities. He proudly served at the Charleston Naval Shipyard for 33 years, where he rose to the distinguished role of Master Nuclear Welder and Planner/Estimator for SIMA (Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity). His craftsmanship and expertise played a critical role in maintaining the strength and readiness of the fleet he so deeply respected.

He held a single-engine pilot’s license, was a Master Diver, and achieved the U.S. Coast Guard 50-ton master certificaiton. Beyond his physical adventures, Richard connected with the world through his dedication as a Ham radio operator, bridging distances and fostering community from afar.
In addition to his professional and adventurous pursuits, Richard was a devoted Mason for an extraordinary 60 years. Raised in June 1966 at Etiwan Lodge #95 AFM in Mt. Pleasant, he remained an active and loyal Scottish Rite Mason and a proud member of the Omar Shrine. His brotherhood and service within these institutions reflected his deep values of loyalty, integrity, and fellowship.
Richard is now reunited with his beloved wife, Bonnie Hamilton Kirkland, and his cherished daughter, Dicksie Louise Kirkland, both of whom preceded him in death.
His life stands as a testament to unwavering dedication, multifaceted skill, and quiet strength. William Richard Kirkland leaves behind a profound imprint on all who had the honor of knowing him and a lasting legacy of honor and excellence.
The family will gather at Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens for a private graveside service at a later date.
