Born on February 9, 1925, in Blackstock, South Carolina, Wilma was the daughter of the late William Brown Dixon, Jr., and the late Elizabeth Grayson Dixon. She found joy in nature, particularly in watching birds. She was intensely interested in the welfare of others, listening, praying for them, and offering sympathy and encouragement.
She is survived by her three beloved children: Wilma Catherine Dukes Broom (Joseph) of North Charleston, SC; Joanne Dukes Campbell Harth (Steve) of Charleston, SC; and James Graydon Dukes, Jr. (Patti) of Charleston, SC. Wilma's legacy continues through her six grandchildren: Bethany Broom Moore (Glen) of Louisville, KY; Nathan Allen Broom (Katie) of Corydon, IN; William Bradley Campbell (Holly) of Florence, SC; Carolyn Campbell Stratos (Milt) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Erin Dukes Sottile (Thomas) of St. Louis, MO; and Megan Dukes of Auburn, AL. She also leaves behind 13 beloved great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who delighted her in their individual ways.
Wilma was preceded in death by her two husbands, Dr. James Graydon Dukes, pastor, and Dr. Hugh H. McGarity, professor and musician, as well as her five siblings who all played a significant role in her life.
