William McGill "Mac" Woodward

February 13, 1932 — April 18, 2016

Dr. William McGill Woodward Sr. "Mac" entered into eternal rest on April 18, 2016. Dr. Woodward was born in Georgetown, SC February 13th 1932.

He later moved to Charleston and upon graduation from high school, enlisted in The United States Navy to attend radioman's school. He was later offered an officer candidate position and proudly served as a navigator and pilot in P-2V Neptunes in VP-7 until leaving the service as a Lieutenant in 1957.

After his service, Mac graduated from The University of South Carolina with a BS in Biology in 1960 and went on to receive his MD at the Medical University of South Carolina in 1964. He maintained a private practice in Charleston until his retirement in 1994.

His accomplishments included serving as Chief of Staff and chairman of credentials committee at St. Francis Xavier Hospital, clinical associate professor of family medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina, faculty of Core Content Review of Family Medicine, member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Chairman of the Program Committee of the SCAFP, past President of the SCAFP, former delegate of the American Academy of Family Physicians, member of the Charleston and South Carolina Medical Society and the South Carolina Medical Association.

Dr. Woodward was a life member of the Sertoma International Civic Club, past President of the Charleston Sertoma Club and secretary of the Sertoma International Speech and Hearing Foundation.

Dr. Woodward leaves behind his loving wife, Virginia Robinson Woodward; his son Bill; his two daughters Cindy Simonsen and Kathy Simons; brother, John Henry Woodward; and six grandchildren.

A visitation will occur this Thursday, April 21 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel at 232 Calhoun Street. A funeral in his honor will take place at John Wesley United Methodist Church at 626 Savannah Highway on Friday, April 22 at 1:00 p.m. Interment, Riverview Memorial Park. A reception honoring his life will follow the burial at 533 Whitechapel Circle, Charleston, SC.
