William A. Winter, Jr., 93, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Betty Baker Winter, entered into eternal rest Saturday, December 7, 2024. His Funeral Service will be held Saturday, December 21, 2024 in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in the funeral chapel on Saturday, December 21 from 10:00 until time of the service.
William (“Bill”) was born August 30, 1931 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late William A. Winter, Sr. and Bernice Raybourne Winter. He attended the High School of Charleston and Ferris University in Big Rapids, Michigan. Bill served in the Sumter Guard (National Guard) for two years prior to enlisting in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict (1951-1955). He was employed by the Post and Courier for 44 years as a printer, primarily in the composing room. During that time, he served on the Charleston International Management Council in Public Relations where he received various awards for outstanding service. Bill loved his church. During his lifetime, he held membership in three churches: Rutledge Avenue Baptist Church in Charleston, First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant, and Sullivan’s Island Baptist Church. He enjoyed serving each church as a deacon, teacher, and in a number of other capacities. Bill was an avid reader, enjoyed working in the yard, and sketching historical buildings and churches.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty; a son, William A. Winter, III and his wife, Laura of Raleigh, NC; granddaughters, Margaret Reed Scanlan (Michael), Ruth “Rudy” deLiesseline Winter, and Louise Ross Winter; great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Rose Scanlan; and sisters in law Peggy Winter and Shirley Winter. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Lila, Russell, and Kenneth.
Memorials may be made to Sullivan’s Island Baptist Church and flowers will be accepted as well.
