William Dewey Wilkes

William Dewey Wilkes, Sr., 86, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Margaret Missel Wilkes, entered into eternal rest Friday, August 2, 2013. A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, August 6, 2013 in The Church of The Holy Communion, 218 Ashley Avenue at 11:00 am. Interment to follow with Military Honors at Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway. William was born February 17, 1927 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late Dewey Edward Wilkes and Lila Sigwald Wilkes. He graduated from Porter Military Academy and The Citadel, and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. William worked for Koppers Co., Inc. for 37 years. At retirement, he was General Manager of International Operations for Forest Products. After retirement, he was active as a volunteer with the Charleston Soil and Water Conservation District, and an employee of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service. In 2006, he was named the National Volunteer of the Year by the NRCS. He was a past President of the Porter Military Academy Alumni Association, and was a member of the Citadel Brigadier Foundation. He was an active lifetime member of The Church of the Holy Communion.He is survived by his wife, Margaret Wilkes; sons, William D. "Billy" Wilkes, Jr. (Nancy Roth), and Alan Perrin Wilkes; daughter, Julia Cooper Wilkes; sister, Gene Wilkes Geraty (Billy); and step-grandchildren, Jay Jeffers and Abby Jeffers.The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. William J. Grossman, Dr. Gregory Miller, Dr. David Egleston, and the staff at Roper Hospital for their skilled and compassionate care.
