William E. Ritter

William E. Ritter, 84, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of the late Janice S. Ritter, entered into eternal rest Saturday, December 23, 2023.  His memorial service will be held Thursday, January 11th in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., West Ashely Chapel, 3360 Glen McConnell Parkway at 11 a.m, and the family will receive friends beginning one hour prior.  Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel.

William was born January 27, 1939, in Horry County, South Carolina, son of the late George Ernest Ritter and Mildred Cecil Ritter. He is survived by his daughter, Carla D. Ritter of Charleston, South Carolina; his brother in-law, Mitchell Sellars (JoAnne) of Panama City, Florida, as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

William was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Janice S. Ritter; his parents George Ernest and Mildred Cecil Ritter; his sister Norma Niles.

William served in the Air Force after graduating high school.  When in the Air Force he met the love of his life, Janice, while stationed at Tyndall Air Force Base, Panama City, Florida. After leaving the Air Force, he and his bride moved to Charleston, where he attended the College of Charleston.

William retired in 1996 after 30 years as an agent with Prudential Insurance Company.  While there he won several awards.  He was also a member of the Optimist Club.  He had previously been an active member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church serving on the church council several terms.  William was also a Master Mason.

Bill didn’t know a stranger and will be remembered for his quick smile and his genuine empathy for all those he met.
