William Haynes "Bushy" Peek, 74, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Karen Romanus Peek, entered into eternal rest Friday, August 10, 2012. A Funeral Service will be held at the cryptside Tuesday, August 14, 2012 in the Holy Cross Cemetery, 604 Fort Johnson Road at 10:00 am. The family will receive friends Monday between 5:00 and 7:00 pm in J. HENRY STUHR, INC. WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Bushy was the son of the late Thomas Earl and Elizabeth Haynes Peek. Raised on Folly Beach, he attended Murray Vocational School in Charleston. He completed the Electrician Apprenticeship at the Charleston Naval Shipyard in 1971. Some of his interests throughout his life included waterskiing, softball, billiards, Nascar, cooking for friends, and being a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America. Bushy is most known for Bushy's Seafood Restaurant, which he owned and operated from 1972-2000. As Bushy used to say, he just happened to "stumble" upon his success. What began as a temporary Restaurant Management position ended up becoming a fulfilling career and landmark for the Folly Beach Community. Bushy's appetite for success served as the foundation for one his greatest accomplishments, being named "Restaurateur of the Year" for the state of South Carolina in 1989. Bushy was additionally well known for his philanthropic generosity in hosting a multitude of civic and political receptions at the restaurant.Throughout the years, Bushy was well known for his extensive involvement and endeavors in the Charleston area. His membership in the Folly Beach Exchange Club and philanthropic services made him a renowned member of the Folly Beach Community. His character is best represented by the acknowledgements granted for his outstanding community service as a citizen of Folly Beach, receiving the Palmetto Pride, Spotlight on Charleston, and numerous other awards for his efforts. Bushy was passionate regarding his community service efforts with the Public Safety Department of Folly Beach on their fundraising events.Bushy was a charter member of the Charleston Restaurant Association during which time he and five others developed the first Taste of Charleston- a renowned event that has raised thousands of dollars for the Children's Hospital Fund. Bushy served on the Executive Board and Board of Directors for the Greater Charleston and State Restaurant Association. His commitment and dedication to the Charleston Restaurant Association led him to pursue the role of Vice President and then President in 1983. Including his years as a restaurateur, Bushy used his notary designation in performing numerous wedding ceremonies for family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of thirty years, Karen Romanus Peek; his son William Haynes Peek Jr., granddaughter Cassidy Rae Peek, and grandson Corey Joseph Kramer all of James Island, and sister, Alice Gaye Fanchette (Dave) of Malone, Florida. William is predeceased by his parents, and sister Earlene Peek Scott. Bushy will be missed by his loving family and particularly his special granddaughter, Cassidy, who was regarded more like a daughter by the hours she and Papa spent together from learning how to bicycle to driving and everything between.
