William Newton Murdock

William "Bill" Newton Murdock, 75, of North Charleston, SC and formerly of Jamestown, RI died Wednesday, December 28, 2016, in North Charleston with loving family by his side. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Northwoods Chapel.
Bill was born August 14, 1941 in New Haven, CT, son of the late Richard Warren Murdock and the late Phyllis Parsons Murdock. He was a US Navy veteran and owner of Jamestown Distributors in Rhode Island.
He is survived by his wife, Annette Murdock of North Charleston, SC; sister, Janice Murdock Martin of Jamestown, RI; three children: Stephen Murdock (Lisa) of Saunderstown, RI, Erica Caswell of Greenville, RI and David Murdock (Kathryn) of Scituate, MA; three stepchildren: Stewart Dixon (Jenny) of SC, Darrell Dixon (Diana) of WA, Ashley Dixon (Jennifer) of SC; seven grandchildren: Madison, Emma and Abby Murdock, Lily Caswell, Linda, V. Maeve and William Murdock; six step-grandchildren: Marissa Dixon, Nicole and Paige Dixon, Audrey, Grace and Charlotte Dixon; four great-grandchildren in South Carolina; a nephew, niece and five great-nieces of Jamestown.
Following his education at Moses Brown School, the University of Rhode Island and New England College and service in the U.S. Navy, Bill eventually settled in Jamestown. Bill and his father co-founded Jamestown Distributors, a marine hardware company on Narragansett Avenue, where the business was a thriving part of the Jamestown economy. Bill later relocated to South Carolina, where he continued to work with Jamestown Distributors until he sold the business.
In his retirement, he dabbled in the stock market, but as anyone who knew Bill knows, his time was spent on the water. More than anything, Bill loved to fish and spent countless hours on the waters of Narragansett Bay and in the mouth of the Atlantic, both in Rhode Island and in Charleston. He was up at 4:00 am on many summer mornings, on the water with a flounder on his hook before the sun rose. More than once surviving peril on the sea (and sometimes on land), his family often said that Bill "had nine lives" -- he surely lived all of them to the fullest, right up to the end, where he shared his love with his family this holiday season. His grandchildren brought out his infectious smile and lent a sparkle to his sea-salty eyes.
Fishermen far and wide will notice Bill's absence this coming summer -- those who knew him will miss his camaraderie, wisdom and humor. Those who didn't know him might just wonder why there are so many more fish in the water.
A memorial service for Bill Murdock is planned for January 21, 2017 at 11:00 am at Central Baptist Church in Jamestown, RI.
