William G. Mitchum (Billy) of James Island, passed away March 17th. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Anita Donnell Mitchum. His funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at St. John’s Lutheran Church at 11:30. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Monday, March 20 at J. Henry Stuhr Downtown Funeral Chapel, 232 Calhoun St, Charleston, SC 29401. Entombment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, 604 Ft. Johnson Road, James island SC, following the service. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel.
Billy was born in Charleston on July 6, 1943, the son of William H. Mitchum and Gladys D. Mitchum. He graduated from Murray Vocational High School and the Charleston Naval Shipyard Apprenticeship School.
Billy retired from Charleston Naval Shipyard with 30 years of service as a Nuclear Inspector Supervisor. He was a former member of the U.S. Army National Guard. He was a devoted member of St. Johns Lutheran Church for over 50 years.
Billy and his wife enjoyed traveling in their motorhome throughout the United States. They were member of the Holiday Rambler RV Club. He also enjoyed fishing in the creeks and rivers of the Low Country.
Billy was a gentle, quiet, and kind man. He was deeply loved by his wife and family.
In addition to his wife, Anita, he is survived by his son; Scott Lee Mitchum (Cristie), Grandchildren; Brooke E. Mitchum and Andrew W. Mitchum, also by his brother-in-law and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
