William Durie Merritt, Sr., 93, of Charleston, SC, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, January 9, 2024. His Funeral Service will be held Monday, January 15, 2024 in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Northwoods Chapel, 2180 Greenridge Road at 2:00 pm.  Interment to follow at Carolina Memorial Park. 

William was born January 6, 1931 in Greenville, SC, son of the late William Paul Merritt and the late Mary Dilworth Merrritt. He was a 1959 Citadel graduate and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.  William was an Accountant at the Charleston Naval Shipyard.  He was a member of James Island Masonic Lodge #396, Scottish Rite Omar Shrine Temple, Life member Elks Lodge, Charleston Rifle Club, VFW, American Legion and Men of the Church.  He enjoyed dancing and was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his daughter, Barbara L. Granger; two sons, Lawrence A. Merritt and William D. Merritt, Jr.; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; many loved nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Carol Merritt of James Island, SC.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Myrtice McRae Merritt; his son, Dennis Merritt; siblings, Lurie Hewett and Jack Paul Merritt.
