William Gordon Lyle

William Gordon Lyle, Jr. of Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community passed into the arms of the Lord on May 11, 2014. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel.

He was born at home on East 80th Street in New York City on December 10, 1920, the son of Dr. W.G. Lyle and Leontine de Sabla Lyle. He attended school in NYC, graduated from St. Paul's School, Concord, NH and Harvard College, class of 1943. For 3 years he lettered in track and football and is remembered for the touchdown that won the 1942 Harvard-Princeton game.

Gordon entered the U.S. Navy as a seaman, went to midshipman school in Chicago, became an instructor for a year and then served as a deck officer in charge of anti-aircraft on the cruiser Little Rock.

His business career was in the investment field, with Clark Dodge for 10 years and Wood, Walker where he had his own investment advisory business.

In 1967 he married Constance Brewer Kilgore. After a year, the family moved to CT where Gordon became a director of Richardson, Vicks Corp., as well as an investment and pension fund manager for various Richardson interests. These terminated when the Lyles moved to Charleston, SC in early 1987.

His first marriage to Helen Niblack ended in divorce. Connie, his wife of 42 years, predeceased him in 2010. He is survived by his daughter Lucy Lyle Tower of Aiken, SC and two grandchildren: Aurora Tower and Alfred Tower; his sister Leontine Lyle Harrower of Comox, Vancouver, Canada and four step-children: John Kilgore, Constance Kilgore Utter, Ralph Kilgore and Robert Kilgore.

In 1989, after residing in Westport, CT for 20 years, they moved to Chalmers St. in Charleston, SC. In CT, Mr. Lyle had been an active member and teacher at St. Paul's church Darien. This he continued at St. Philip's Church here in Charleston.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2014 in St. Philip's Church. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Burial will be later in Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, NY next to his beloved wife Connie.
