William H. Jameson, 90, of Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Virginia Smith Jameson, entered into eternal rest Saturday, November 23, 2013. His funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 26, 2013, in J. HENRY STUHR., INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 232 Calhoun Street, at 10:30 a.m. Entombment, Carolina Memorial Park Mausoleum with military honors. The family will receive friends Monday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Stuhr's Downtown Chapel.
Bill was born July 4, 1923 in Anderson, South Carolina, son of the late Lynn O. Jameson and the late Idona Garrison Jameson. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, was an ex-POW, retired manager of The Colony House Restaurant and a member of the First Baptist Church of Charleston. Bill attended Clemson University and was a member of the Charleston Rifle Club, Charleston Elks Lodge #242 and American Legion Post #147. Bill was a mason, a member of Scottish Rite and Omar Shrine.
Bill had flown on B-17's in 49 bombing raids over Germany, Yugoslavia and Austria as a tail gunner. On his 50th and final mission, he was shot down over Vienna, Austria, where he was captured by the Germans on 7/26/1944. He served 9 months in various German prison camps. After the war, he worked for the Plantation Pipeline before moving to Charleston to manage The Colony House Restaurant. Bill also helped to establish BJ's Iron Kettle and Poogan's Porch.
He is survived by two daughters: Janice J. Field (Rob) of Dayton, OH and Kathy J. Hare of Charleston; and five grandchildren: Halle E. Field, Laura M. Field, Alexandra J. Field, Justin C. Hare (Molly) and Arden E. Hare. He was predeceased by two sisters: Mary Margaret Jameson and Ruth Snipes.
