William Durmie Hughes, Jr., 89, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Ethel DuRant Hughes, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, April 11, 2023. His funeral service will be held Sunday, April 16, 2023 in Ashley River Baptist Church at 3:00 pm, and the family will receive friends beginning one hour prior. Burial will follow at Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel.
William was born October 22, 1933 in Lake City, South Carolina, son of the late William Durmie Hughes Sr. And Marva Lee Kissam Hughes. He graduated from St. Andrew’s High School and Campbell Junior College, and received a B.A. in English and Bible from Baylor University in 1955, proceeding to serve in the United States Army as a PFC. He used his English degree while stationed at Fort Jackson, Fort Knox and Germany and received an honorable discharge in 1963.
“Bill” married Ethel Stackhouse DuRant in 1960 in Dovesville, S.C. They had two daughters. He attended Ashley River Baptist Church and served as a deacon. He began Charleston Motor Company, a car dealership, and did vehicle inspections. He enjoyed writing and won the Golden Pen Award from the Post and Courier.
In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by his daughters, Ellen McCrory (Scott) and Mary Carol Hughes Smith (Kenneth); grandsons, Brian McCrory, Kyle McCrory, Kevin McCrory, Ean Smith, Zachary Smith, and Joshua Smith; great-grandchildren, Katherine McCrory, Margaret McCrory, Edward McCrory, and Pyren Smith; and brother, Elmond "Jake" Hughes (Geri).
