Jenks was born December 9, 1938 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late Coming Ball Gibbs and Dorothy Seay Gibbs. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jenny; his children, Tess Gibbs Craddock (Clay), Lee Gibbs Depret-Bixio (Christian); his grandchildren: William Gibbs Craddock, Cecilia Depret-Bixio Hyndman (Justin), Anne Claiborne Craddock, and Emma Lee Depret-Bixio; his sister, Elizabeth Lee Gibbs; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Coming Ball Gibbs, Jr.
