In what would have been his 80th year with us, Bill sadly passed away in a peaceful manner in the comfort of his home with family by his side on April 29, 2021.
His Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, May 4, 2021 in the Ministry Center at St. Andrew's Church-Mount Pleasant, 440 Whilden Street at 2:00 pm. Interment with military honors will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Road.
Born in Fountain Inn, SC, he lived most of his childhood and early adulthood in Gaffney, SC. After graduating from Presbyterian College, he started a career in banking and enjoyed a lifetime of achievement in account sales in mortgage banking insurance. He served in the National Guard for many years.
Moving to Spartanburg, he met and married his first wife, Martha Ann Walker, mother of their children, Jenny, Deede, and Beth. Bill loved all sports, especially golf. He was most proud of being part of the elite group of scorers at the Master's and loved being on Amens Corner every spring to see the "old timers" and "young rookies" compete for the famous green jacket. In addition, he was a lifelong Gamecock fan!
In 1994, Bill vacationed at Kiawah Island where he met his sweetheart and life partner, Lisa Greenway. They married a year later and spent the next 25 years making a home in Mt. Pleasant they shared with their yellow labs and rescued kittens.
He will be remembered by his children and grandchildren as a great father and grandfather, who loved them truly and deeply. He will be remembered as a man with a great sense of humor, style, and to his dearest friends - The Silver Fox or Helmet Head.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Lisa Greenway Degner of Mt. Pleasant, SC; daughters, Jennifer Wakefield (Jay), Debra Dye, and Elizabeth Earle; stepsister, Sherri Bowers (John) of Charlotte, NC; and grandchildren, Anne Townsend Wakefield, Walker Wakefield, Brownlee Wakefield, Garrett Dye, Payton Dye, Madison Earle, and Haley Earle.
The family wishes to thank Lisa's employees for their years of daily love and support. The family also wishes to thank the ladies from Care for Life and the care team from Amedysis Hospice for their compassionate care. A special thank you to Diana Thomas, a dear friend, who cared for Bill and became a part of the family.
