William Palmer Crandell, (USAF, Ret)

Lt. Colonel William Palmer Crandell, USAF Reserve (Ret), 90, husband of Martha Green Crandell passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2012. The relatives and friends of Lt. Col. William Crandell are invited to attend his Memorial Service, with Military Honors, on Saturday, June 16, 2012 in J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL at 10:00 am. Burial will be at a later date in Ft. Lincoln Cemetery, 3201 Bladensburg Road, in Brentwood, MD. The family will receive friends immediately after the service.
Lt. Col. Crandell was born on October 11, 1921 in Shady Side, Maryland, son of the late William Harrison Crandell and Ruby E. Linton Crandell. He retired from the United States Air Force Reserve in 1967, having served heroically with the 57tyh Bomb Wing, 487th Bombardment Squadron, 340th Bombardment Group in WWII as a B25 pilot with over 60 missions flown. Part of his service was within the North Africa and southern Europe campaigns. In addition, he was a retired attorney, serving as Chief, Airworthiness Certification Division, General Counsel's Office of the FAA. He was a member of the Church of the Holy Cross on Sullivans Island. Finally, he was a member of Benjamin B. French Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite Lodge, and the Omar Shrine.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Martha Green Crandell of Mt. Pleasant, SC; one son, William Dean Crandell and his wife, Barbara, of Spokane, WA; four grandchildren, Kimberly Crandell, Allison Crandell, Heather Havens and Chad Roberts; five great grandchildren; one brother-in-law, John C. Harding of Easton, MD; nieces, Lana Harding and Sharon Underwood; and nephews, Phillip Green and Kenneth Green. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Melinda Crandell and a sister, Winifred C. Harding.
