William Patrick "Pat" Clute, 70, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Joanie "Jake" Miller Clute, entered into eternal rest Thursday, April 21, 2016. A gathering of friends will be held Sunday, April 24, 2016, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel, 232 Calhoun Street. There will be a graveside service at Holy Cross Cemetery, James Island, on Monday, April 25, at 2:00 p.m. It will be a casual celebration, in the spirit of all that is Irish, and all are welcome.
Pat was born March 17, 1946, St. Patrick's Day, in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late William Greene Clute and Catherine Walters Clute. At an early age, Pat became the patriarch of his family and helped, along with his adoring mother, to support and raise his tight-knit family. He was a graduate of Bishop England High School and honorably served in the United States Marines Corp. He retired from MUSC as the manager of printing service and was the co-founder of Pudgy's Lounge with friend, Tommy Smith. Pat was the finance officer for the American Legion Post 147, James Island, Head Weenie of the Weenie Boys Cooking Team, and a member of the James Island Yacht Club, the Charleston Rifle Club, the Charleston Elks Lodge #242, and the Ark Lounge.
In addition to his wife, Jake, he is survived by two daughters: Christine C. Slothower (Ricky) and S. Kaylyn Clute; step-daughter, Kristin R. DuPree (Kevin) of Charleston, SC; step-son, John Peter Rugheimer, III (Meagan), all of Charleston. He also leaves four precious sisters: Sandra C. Orsini (Dave) of Waterford, CT, Sheryl C. Hennon of Sevierville, TN, Lisa C. Roscover and Susan C. Sloan (John), as well as his beloved sister-in-law, Nancy Sack, all of Charleston. Papa will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by his nine grandchildren: Carter, Jacob, Taylor, Sarah, Megan, Lucas, McKenna, Ashley, and John, along with many nieces and nephews and their families.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Joyce Sack Clute; his sister, Mary Claire Clute; and his brother, Robert Clute.
Pat will be remembered as a fun-loving, humorous, giving and fiercely devoted family man. Those that knew him will remember him as a man that lived seventy years but had ninety-years-worth of fun, laughter and adventures. Paddy will be missed but his Irish eyes will be smiling down on us all.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to James Island Outreach, 1853 Maybank Highway, Charleston, SC 29412.
