William Mark "Duke" Cloyd, 87, of Mount Pleasant, SC, husband of Odell Moore Cloyd died Saturday, May 3, 2014. His Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, May 6, 2014 in the First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant, 681 McCants Drive, at 3:00 pm. Burial with military honors will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday in the J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.
Duke was born May 25, 1926 in Mount Pleasant, SC, son of the late Rollie Cloyd and Thelma Erline Easterling Cloyd, and was raised in Mount Pleasant, fishing and hunting in the local creeks and rivers with his siblings. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and retired as a Boatswain's Mate First Class. Following his Navy career, he worked as a security guard and then as a rigger at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. After retiring from the shipyard he worked as a security guard at Cooper Hall in Mount Pleasant. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Mount Pleasant. Duke loved the outdoors, but most important to him was his family.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Odell; his three daughters, Betty J. Stacks, Patricia MacFarland and her husband Kevin, and Sherri Cumbee and her husband Kris, all of Mt. Pleasant; his son, Mark James "Jimmy" Cloyd and his wife Lea, also of Mt. Pleasant; three grandsons, Scott Stacks, Dustin Stacks and his wife Leah, and Kevin "Kip" MacFarland; one granddaughter, Kylie MacFarland; one great granddaughter, Hannah Stacks; and his sister, Linda Cloyd of Mt. Pleasant. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, William Stacks; his sisters, Thelma Erline Coons and Catherine Mariani; and his brothers, Rollie Cloyd, Jr. and Royce P. Cloyd.
