William Pettigrew Clare, M.D., 75, of Sandpiper Village in Mount Pleasant, SC, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, October 8, 2014. His Funeral Service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 10, 2014 at St. Philip's Church. Interment, St. Philip's Churchyard. The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Pettigrew was born October 22, 1938 in Atlanta, GA, son of the late Virginia Pettigrew Clare and the late Fountain Stewart Clare. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and the Medical College of South Carolina. Trained in Internal Medicine, he was in private practice in Charleston for thirty-eight years before retiring in 2006. He served as a Medical Officer in the South Carolina Air Force National Guard.
He was an active member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church where he served as a member of the vestry, chalice bearer, and Sunday School teacher. He was a member of numerous medical organizations, including Medical Society of South Carolina, Charleston County Medical Society, and the Society for the Relief of Widows and Orphans, as well as South Carolina Society, St. Andrew's Society, Society of Colonial Wars, the Huguenot Society, the Charleston Club, and Carolina Yacht Club.
Pettigrew is survived by his wife of fifty years, Marianne Gaillard Clare; son William P. Clare, Jr., M.D. and his wife, Michelle, of Charleston; daughters Marianne G. Clare of Charleston, and Virginia C. Lyda and her husband, Robert, of Charlotte, NC; four grandchildren, Will and Lucas Clare, and Margaret and Bobby Lyda; brother, Dr. F. Stewart Clare of Columbia, SC; and two sisters, Brantley Bull of Ridgeway, SC and Elizabeth Thomas of Myrtle Beach, SC.
