Entered into eternal rest on the morning of April 12, 2011, after a short illness, William Arthur Cawley, first married to the late Virginia Mary Cawley and husband of Joanna Swain Cawley. Residence, North Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial Friday, April 15, 2011 at 9:00 AM in St. John the Beloved Catholic Church. The Prayers of Final Commendation and Farewell will be held in Florence National Cemetery.
Bill was born December 11, 1925 in New York, New York, the youngest child of John Martin Cawley and Anna Winters Cawley. He was graduated from Harvard University in 1946 with a BA and in 1950 from Tufts University with a BSCE, and in 1955 from MIT with his Masters Degree. He was an Engineer and a longtime Researcher with The Environmental Protection Agency and lastly with Gulf Coast Hazardous Waste Consortium.
Bill served with the US Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He finished his naval career with the USNR retiring as Lieutenant Commander. During his distinguished career, he was a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Diplomate American Academy of Environmental Engineers and American Institute Chemical Engineers, Sigma Xi, Chi Epsilon and was Editor of Waste Management.
He is survived by his wife of North Charleston, SC; four daughters, the children of his first wife: Susan Cawley Dolinar (Louis J.) of Simpsonville, SC, Virginia Cawley-Picarelli (Edward) of Alexandria, VA, Margaret Cawley Stone (Kenneth) of Woodbury, MN and Marianne Cawley of North Charleston, SC; two sons: William Arthur Cawley, Jr. (Carol)of Skeanatles, NY and Daniel J. Cawley (Michele) of Cincinnati, OH; eight grandchildren: Melanie, Bridget, Shannon, Elizabeth, Bryan, Owen, Kelly and Colleen.
