William "Billy" Hester Mitchell, 85, of Isle Of Palms, South Carolina, husband of Margaret Watt Mitchell died Monday, December 11, 2017. His funeral service will be held at the graveside on Saturday, December 16, 2017 in Christ Church Cemetery, 2304 Highway 17 N., Mt. Pleasant at 2:00 pm. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. Billy was born February 26, 1932 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late Alexander Robert Mitchell and the late Emilie Mae Hester Mitchell of Palmetto Fort Farms, Mount Pleasant. He was married to Margaret Watt Mitchell of Anderson, SC. He attended local schools in Mount Pleasant and was active in 4H Club work. Billy was a member of the State Judging Team which judged at the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago in 1947. He graduated from Clemson in 1953 with an Engineering degree. He served as a Lieutenant in the United States Signal Corps at Panzer, Boeblingen, Germany from 1954-1956. Billy began his work career at Ralston Purina in Charlotte, NC and returned to this area as assistant city engineer for the City of Charleston. He was later involved in the initiation of a class for licensing professional engineers in the area and worked as a professional engineer in many aspects of land development. He served as a project engineer for the Hilton Head Company, the State Ports Authority, Charleston County Public Works and was town engineer for the Town of Mount Pleasant where he retired in 1997. An active Kiwanian, he received the Hixson Award and a life membership working to increase membership and serving three terms as president. He also served on the vestry of Christ Church, Mount Pleasant and was a member of the Saint Cecelia Society. Billy was a member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church on Sullivan's Island.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret W. Mitchell of Mount Pleasant; was blessed with three sons and beloved daughters-in-law, William "Bill" (Suzanne) of Commanche, TX, Carl (Allison) of Woodbine, MD and Jonathan (Leonie) Atlanta, GA; and six grandchildren, Nikolaus, Philip, Jakob, Katie, Ashley and Sarah.
