William "Billy" Albert Baker, 70, of James Island, SC entered into eternal rest at home on Thursday, October 5, 2017. His funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 in Epworth United Methodist Church, 1540 Camp Road at 3:00 p.m. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 pm. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Billy was born in Charleston on June 24, 1947 to the late James Leroy Baker, Sr. and Evelyn Beale Baker. He was fondly referred to as "Billy Baker the Touchdown Maker" by many of his fellow James Island Ram schoolmates. Throughout the years Billy was also given the nickname "The Ball" due to his many athletic interests: Football, Baseball, Volleyball, Softball and Golf. After graduating from James Island High School he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force serving in Florida and Okinawa during the Vietnam War as a Military Police Officer. After returning to Charleston, Billy married Marilyn Myers in 1976. He was a member of the Saltwater Sports Club and Tri-County Sports Club which sponsored many local golf and fishing events throughout the years.
Billy is survived by his wife, Marilyn; daughter, Stacy Renee Baker; son, Daniel William Baker; and grandson, Cory Marshall Butler. Other family members include sister-in-law, Joyce Nave Baker; nieces: Chris Clardy and Keri Baker; brother-in-law, Steve Myers; nephews: Stevie Myers and Chris Myers; and cousins: Al Oswald, Eleanor Oswald, Chubby Baker and Ann Schwacke in the Charleston area with other cousins in North Carolina, Virginia, Maine and Florida. He is preceded in death by his older brother James "Roy" Leroy Baker Jr.
Many thanks to the Saltwater Sports Club and Card Club members for their encouragement and support during Billy's illness. He was deeply loved by many close friends and family members.
