William Jerry Acker, Charleston, SC.

Jerry passed away peacefully after a brief illness on December 22, 2025.

Jerry was born in Anderson, SC, on Feb 7, 1943; however, he spent most of his adult years in Charleston. He graduated from Hannah Boys High School, Anderson. Jerry attended Anderson College, Forrest College, Erskine College and Furman University where he met his wife, Betty Jane Brown, and they married on June 26, 1965. He was predeceased by his father, James Ralph Acker; his mother, Ruby G. Acker; and his sister, Peggy Acker Broome. He is survived by his loving wife, Jane B. Acker; his sister, Linda Acker Ellis; and his nephew, Tim C. Ellis. Jerry and Jane recently celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Jerry was a lifelong and proud employee of the SC Tax Commission. He enjoyed his work there for 35 years as an Auditor and as the Charleston Office Customer Service Representative where he made many lifelong friends. Jerry was admired for his extensive tax and accounting knowledge which he happily shared with the general public, other auditors as well as many CPA's and accountants.

Jerry was a great supporter of and very passionate about his love of animals. This showed in his devotion to the Charleston Animal Society (CAS). For this commitment he was awarded the CAS President's Award for his leadership, vision, and generous support. Jerry often put his beliefs and dedication into action; this led to his decision to fund the CAS Kitten Intensive Care Unit, which is named in honor of both Jerry and Jane Acker.

Jerry did have a deep connection with music, so much so, he purchased a Seeburg Juke Box to house his extensive collection of original vinyl records. This connection deepened when Jerry and Jane discovered a new love, shagging. Shagging, the official dance of South Carolina, became a great pastime for many years. Jerry actually shagged right along with the best. He and Jane sincerely enjoyed this time with many friends in the shagging world, as well as those in the 242 Elks Club. Lifelong friendships and memories were formed.

To know Jerry was to know his undeniable sense of humor and quick wit. Jerry was well read and a deep thinker, all of these talents combined allowed him the ability to converse with any one on any subject... He never met a stranger.

Jerry was very active for years at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Charleston.

A memorial service for Jerry will be held on Tuesday, December 30th, 2025, at 2:00 PM, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Ashley on Sam Rittenberg Blvd. A reception will immediately follow the service in Covenant Hall at the church with light refreshments allowing for visits with family and share memories of Jerry.

Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel.

In Lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Charleston Animal Society in Jerry's memory.
