Our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Wilford, D. Mathews, Jr., 76, of North Charleston, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at Trident Hospital. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2012, at 3:00 pm at J. HENRY STUHR, NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
Mr. Mathews was born in 1935 in Iowa City, Iowa. He was the eldest of three children born to Wilford D. and Hazel Mathews, Sr. He was a graduate of Bayard High in Bayard, Iowa, the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Webster College, Missouri. He served in the United States Air Force from 1953 until 1984, retiring as Lt. Colonel. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
Mr. Mathews was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Altus Lodge No. 62, Altus, Oklahoma and the Order of the Eastern Star No. 135, Clinton, Tennessee.
Surviving are his mother, Hazel Mathews of Elston, IA; his two sisters; Mrs. Velma Anderson of Ellston, IA and Mrs. Sandra Kilkenney of Creston, IA; his four children, Joey Mathews and his wife Lauren, of Winchester, VA, Trey Mathews and his wife, Amanda of North Charleston, Timothy Maull and his wife, Sherry, of Charleston, and Phillip Maull and wife Penny of Oklahoma City, OK; eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
