Wilbur Frank "Buddy" Sharpe, Sr. 96, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Margie "Bonnie" Castles Sharpe entered into eternal rest Friday, June 24, 2016. The family will receive friends Sunday in J. HENRY STUHR, INC. WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. His funeral service will be held at the graveside Friday, July 1, 2016 in Southland Memorial Gardens, 700 West Dunbar Road at 2:00 p.m.
Buddy was born April 30, 1920 in Gaston SC, one of five children of the late Wilbur Maulden Sharpe and Girlie Mims Sightler Sharpe. He graduated from Clemson University in 1943 with a BS degree in Civil Engineering. Buddy served construction duties with the US Army Corp of Engineers in the Philippine Islands from July 1943 to October 1946. He was employed by the South Carolina Highway Department from November 1946 to September 1950 in the construction of roads and bridges. From September 1950 through June 1951 he worked with B.P. Barber and Associates on the design and construction of water treatment facilities. From June 1951 through April 1956 he worked for E.I. DuPont at the Savannah River Plant in Aiken, SC. From April 1956 to October 1962 he worked at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Paris Island SC as a specification writer for construction by contract of buildings, roads, parking and drainage facilities. From October 1962 through March 1986 he was employed by the Charleston Naval Shipyard as the head of the Maintenance Control Division. Buddy retired from this employment as a GS 19. After retirement from government service he was employed as a quality control engineer for Green Hut Construction of Florida to construct other facilities at the Charleston Naval Shipyard.
Buddy is survived by his wife of 67 years, Bonnie; three sons : Wilbur Franklin Sharpe Jr. of Litchfield Beach, SC, John Phillip Sharpe of Charleston, SC, and Richard Castles Sharpe of Charleston, SC; five grandchildren : James Marion Hutto III of Johns Island, SC, Margie Elizabeth Vaughn of Brookhaven, SC, Wilbur Franklin Sharpe III of New York, NY, Timothy Webb Sharpe of Charleston, SC, and Mirrel Castles Sharpe of Charleston, SC; two great-grandchildren: Ragan Lynn Hutto of Johns Island, SC, and Haden Callie Vaughn of Brookhaven, GA.
He was preceded in death by siblings : Louise Ellenberg Sharpe Blanton, Alice Viola Sharpe Stroud, Jack Dan Sharpe, and John William Sharpe , all of the Columbia, SC area.
