Weiler Reeder Hurren, Ph.D., 79, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Carolyn Cobb Hurren died Sunday, November 23, 2014. The relatives and friends of Dr. Weiler Hurren, are invited to attend his Funeral Service on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 in the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2115 N. Highway 17, Mount Pleasant at 10:00 am. Interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery, Hartsville, SC at 4:00 pm. The family will receive friends Monday, December 1, 2014 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.
Dr. Hurren was born May 16, 1935 in Salt Lake City, Utah, son of the late Henry Reeder Hurren and the late Katherine Weiler Hurren. He was a Professor of Physics and Head of the Department of Physics at The Citadel since 1980 until he retired as Professor Emeritus, 2006-2011. Dr. Hurren also served previously as Chairman of the Department of Physics at Western Illinois University since 1972. His B.S. and M.S. degrees are from Utah State University and the University of South Carolina, respectively, and he received his Ph.D. degree in 1968 from Brigham Young University where his doctoral studies centered on magnetic resonance phenomena and theoretical physics. Dr. Hurren served in the U.S. Army, Chemical Corps during the Cuban missile crisis, 1962-64. While on sabbatical leave 1976-78, he participated in a controlled thermonuclear fusion research project at BYU and Billings Energy Corporation, doing much of the actual construction of the Topolotron, a device to magnetically confine and implode a charged gas to temperatures comparable with those at the core of the sun. He also researched C60 and the Icosahedral Group Ih: Simplification methods and group-theoretical applications, 1991-92. He served a mission for the LDS church in Ontario, Canada from 1955-57. He voluntarily gave 50 years of service in various capacities in the LDS church. He loved scouting and earned his Eagle Scout in 1949. He was a Boy Scout camp leader 1953-54. He also loved classic poetry, Puccini's Operas, English literature and 20th C. History. Dr. Hurren was an avid sportsman, loved baseball and played competitive power volleyball, golf and swam on a regular basis.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Cobb Hurren of Mt. Pleasant, SC; two sons, Henry Weiler Hurren of Centennial, CO and Byron Lee Hurren of Spartanburg, SC; three daughters, Katherine Louise Hurren Axley of Gaithersburg, MD, Emily Caroline Hurren Keller of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Meridith Amanda Hurren Jones of Mt. Pleasant, SC; sister, Patricia Kaye Hubbard of Springville, UT; twelve grandchildren, Elizabeth Louise Hurren Benson, Jacob Weiler Hurren, Troy Cobb Hurren, Byron Paul Hurren, Audrey Elizabeth Hurren, Daniel Malcolm Hurren, Lydia Jane Hurren, Caroline Louise Axley, Emma Carolyn Hurren, Cameron James Axley, Logan Henry Axley, and Carolyn Jane Jones. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Henry Richard Hurren.
