Wayne Moseley

Roger Wayne Moseley, husband of Betsy Moseley and father of Dupre and Caroline, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2023. Wayne will be remembered by many as the owner of the Isle of Palms Red & White.

Wayne was born in Ridgeland, SC on July 20, 1946. He was the 6th of 8 children born to the late Wilbur Carl and Pansy Fennell Moseley. He grew up in Allendale, SC and the surrounding communities.

Wayne was a member of the Allendale Fairfax High School Class of 1966 and maintained lifelong friendships with many of his classmates.  He was best known in high school and in Allendale as an exceptional basketball player and he later played for the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie.

Wayne began his successful career in the grocery industry at Thomas and Howard in Allendale, SC. He was transferred to Charleston  when the company became part of Wetterau, Inc. Wayne spent 17 years with Wetterau and became Director of Store Development. He supervised the construction and leasing of grocery stores throughout SC, NC, and GA. He was proud of his career at Wetterau and cherished the friendships that continued throughout his life.

In 1985, Wayne became the owner and operator of the Isle of Palms Red & White. He was a successful small business owner and enjoyed his work and customers. During the 28 years he owned the IOP Red & White, he employed more than 2000 people, many of whom were teenagers in their first summer job.  When Wayne needed business or personal services, he first looked to see if a former employee was in that line of work. Encounters with former employees always began with their sharing how much they had learned from him. He was instrumental in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo and was recognized by the City of Isle of Palms for his assistance.

In 2013, Wayne continued his pursuits in small business, opening Towne Centre Market and Shell Station where he was joined by several of his former managers.

Wayne’s proudest accomplishments were his family and his 35 year marriage to Betsy. Together they raised two wonderful daughters, Dupre and Caroline, on the Isle of Palms. They welcomed sons-in-law David and Will into the family and experienced the joy of their grandson Thomas. Wayne loved all of his family and the gatherings in Allendale.

Wayne was happiest when traveling with his family, visiting all 50 states and snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef. His best trips were his road trips, visits to see his four brothers in Oregon, and time spent on Lake Moultrie.

Wayne was a member of First United Methodist Church Isle of Palms. He served on and chaired numerous committees and enjoyed his involvement with children and youth programs with his daughters.

Wayne served as Chairman of the Board of Directors at the John de la Howe School, which he also attended. His education there was in farming and he was always a farmer at heart.

Wayne was active in the SC Chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business, representing SC in Washington, DC. He was a member of the IOP Exchange Club for over 30 years.

Wayne is survived by his wife Betsy Yarborough Moseley; daughters Dupre Moseley Schley and Caroline Moseley Hall; sons-in-law David Schley and Will Hall; grandson Thomas Hall; brother, Joe Moseley (Joanne); sisters Gwynn Mixson, Gayle Fillman, and Dell Allen (Charles); sisters-in-law Carol Moseley and Dupre Young; and brothers-in-law Joe Yarborough and John Young; 25 nieces and nephews; and 48 great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers Ken Moseley, Randy Moseley, and Bo Moseley; and brother-in-law Paul Fillman.
