Wayne Russell Fanning was born December 20, 1947 in Charleston, SC. His parents were Buist Martin Fanning, Jr. and Myra Hutson Eason. Wayne was the oldest of eight siblings: twins Buist Martin Fanning, III (Jan) & Jack Edwin Fanning (Betsy), Richard Henry Fanning (Killed in Vietnam), Gene Eason Fanning (Ada, deceased), Janice Myra Fanning (deceased), Charles Louis Fanning (Kathryn), and Carol Fanning Jeter (Ray). Wayne leaves behind many adoring nieces and nephews.
Wayne earned a B.S. in Chemistry from the College of Charleston. He was in the Naval Reserves (1969-1972) and was called to active duty during the Vietnam War. He and his brother Jack were discharged under the survivorship act after the death of his brother, Ricky.
Wayne married Dixie Lynne Herndon on August 14, 1976 in Charleston, SC. They both worked for SC Dept. of Health and Environmental Control (SCHDEC). After they were married, Dixie changed jobs to work for the Charleston Water System. Wayne served South Carolina for 31 years as SCDHEC Chemist, Laboratory Supervisor, Hazardous Waste Manager, Hazardous Release Emergency Response Coordinator, and Charleston District Director. He retired in 2005.
Wayne was a Life Member of the SC Water Environment Association and the Sierra Club. Active member in the Exchange Club of Daniel Island providing service to family, community and country. He enjoyed family, woodworking, fishing, shrimping, gardening and sincere friendships.
Wayne's service will be held Saturday, March 27, 2021 in Magnolia Cemetery, 70 Cunnington Ave, Charleston, SC at 10:00 am. The family will receive friends Friday, March 26, 2021 in J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC from 5:00-7:00 pm. Due to the ongoing pandemic, capacity will be monitored and social distancing and masks are encouraged.
