Watt William Jordan

Captain Watt William Jordan, 86, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Dorothy S. Jordan passed away on June 12, 2015. The Memorial Service will be on Saturday, June 20, 2015, in the Rodenberg Chapel, (Franke at Seaside), 1885 Franke Drive, Mt. Pleasant at 10:30 a.m. Inurnment will follow in the Franke Columbarium. Captain Jordan was born July 29, 1928, in Union Springs, Alabama, son of the late Watt and Lorena Jordan. After graduation in 1950 from Auburn University, he entered the U.S. Navy as a commissioned Ensign. During his thirty years as a Surface Warfare Officer he gained experience in mine warfare, anti-submarine and anti-air warfare, as well as strategic planning and politico-military affairs. Principal operational assignments at-sea included Commanding Officer USS JACANA (MSC 193), USS MCCAFFERY (DD860) and USS LEAHY (CG16); Executive Officer USS BRUSH (DD745) and USS CHICAGO (CG 11); Missile Officer USS LOS ANGELES (CA 135); and Flag Lieutenant to Commander Seventh Fleet. During tours of duty ashore, principally at the Pentagon, he served in a variety of staff positions, some of which reported directly to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. His last tour of duty was as Chief of Staff to, and for a while acting Commander of the Mine Warfare Command. He is a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College, Industrial College of the Armed Forces and numerous specialized courses of instruction at various Navy Schools. Captain Jordan was awarded the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (Gold Star), Meritorious Unit Citation (Three Stars), Combat Action Ribbon, China Service Medal, Navy Occupation Medal (Europe), National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal (Three Stars) and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

In retirement, Captain Jordan was very active in the Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW), a patriotic service organization of United States commissioned officers. At the time of his death, he was a national General Staff Officer emeritus, in recognition of over ten years of service as an officer in the national MOWW organization. He was a past Commander of the local Chapter. As Patriotic Education Chairman, he instilled love of country in thousands of local young people, founded and participated in an annual Youth Leadership Conference and annual Massing of the Colors, and oversaw the attribution of awards to ROTC and JROTC students as well as Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Sires Jordan of Mt. Pleasant, SC; one son, Watt W. Jordan, III, and his wife, Margaret Anne; his daughter, Suzanne Jordan McClary; two grandchildren, Mallory Lyn Collins and William Eugene McClary, III. He was preceded in death by a grandchild, Dana Alexandra Jordan.
