Warren Joseph Surette

Warren Joseph Surette, 77, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Elizabeth Surette died Saturday, February 13, 2016. His memorial service will be held Saturday, February 20, 2016 in the J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be held at Beaufort National Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends Saturday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Warren was born September 27, 1938 in Reading, Massachusetts, son of the late P. Ernest Surette and the late Susan Muise Surette. Warren graduated from Northeastern University in Boston in 1962, obtained a masters in telecommunications from Boulder Colorado and a was graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk VA. He was commissioned as a Signal Officer in the United States Army. Warren served as a platoon leader in Germany and as Company Commander in Vietnam. He taught computers at the Signal School at Ft Monmouth New Jersey. After graduating from the AT&T Commercial Communications Course he served as a Communications-Electronics System Engineer at the Defense Communications Agency, at the US Army-Pacific in Hawaii and later on the Joint Staff of the Defense Department. After retiring from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel, Warren worked in industry on important defense telecommunications projects at TRW, Honeywell, CSC and Raytheon.

Warren's passions were handball, sailing, and golfing in Annapolis and Charleston. During breaks from his hectic work schedule, he could often be found on the Pentagon's handball courts playing with Generals and lieutenants and ran the Honolulu marathon once and the Marine Core marathon twice. He regularly fished with his family in Hawaii and Charleston SC. He learned how to sail with his family in Hawaii at Hickam Harbor and was a regular on the Chesapeake Bay sailing his 34 foot sailboat for over 25 years with his family in the Parish Creek sailing association. Warren participated in supporting Citadel ice hockey, Charleston Math and Science, and St John's Catholic School.

In addition to his wife, Elizabeth, he is survived by his daughter, Deborah S. Rosenbaum and husband Kenneth Jr., of Charleston, SC; son, Dean Surette of Reston, VA; three grandsons, Garrett, Alexander, and Connor Rosenbaum; three sisters, Ellen, Dolores, and Suzanne; and three brothers, Dennis, Robert, and Stephen. He was preceded in death by his sister, Pauline.
