Wanda Allene Harwood

January 26, 1921 — January 3, 2013

Wanda Allene Harwood, 91, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of Major Ray D. Harwood, USAF (Ret), entered into eternal rest in the early morning of Thursday, January 3, 2013. A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 5, 2013 in the Westminster Presbyterian Church at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway. Wanda was born January 26, 1921 in Wichta Falls, Texas daughter of the late Homer Miller Roberts and the late Ola Jane Roberts. She was the wife of the late Major Ray D. Harwood, USAF (Ret). She was a war bride and was in love with and married to Major Harwood for 70 years. She followed Ray from town to town across the country during his training in WWII, often with a footlocker on her back, getting off the bus in a Yankee town in the snow, with nowhere to live until she could find a small closet to live in during the overcrowded conditions of WWII. She followed him until he was sent to the Pacific theatre of the war. Along with Ray, she was an active participant of the reunions of the 504th Bomb Group. They were truly two of the greatest generation. Wanda was active in her church circle and many artistic crafts such as embroidery, quilting and ceramics. She was a member of the Charleston Embroiders Guild. She enjoyed growing African Violets and was a superb cook. She was a woman made up of absolute love for her family. Her family will always adore her for the love and support she gave us. She is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Jane Malanos (Dr. George E.) of Charleston; a son, Marcus Donald Harwood (Jan) of Powder Springs, GA; grandchildren, Adriane M. Belton (Joseph) of Mt. Pleasant, Peter Malanos (Megan) of Mt. Pleasant, Brian D. Harwood of Piedmont, SC and Ashley G. Harwood of Charleston; and 5 great-grandchildren.Memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1157 Sam Rittenberg Blvd., Charleston, SC 29407.
