Walter Felix Tolley, Jr., 90, of Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Jean McCowan Tolley entered into eternal rest Saturday, November 17, 2018, after 57 years of marriage. His Funeral Service will be held Sunday, November 25, 2018 in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway at 2:00 p.m. A gathering of friends will follow service. Entombment will be held Monday, November 26, 2018 in Guilford Memorial Park, 6000 High Point Road, Greensboro, NC at 11:00 a.m.
Walter was born May 26, 1928 in Selma, North Carolina, son of the late Walter Felix Tolley and Berla Pugh Tolley. He was a U.S. Army Korean Conflict veteran. Walter retired from Southern Railroad after over 30 years as a track engineer. He then worked for an additional 20 years for Brason Construction, a private railroad contractor. Walter later returned to work for fun as a third shift security guard at the Courtyard Marriott, downtown Charleston for over 13 years eventually retiring at the age of 85. Walter was a member of the Omar Shrine Temple, Scottish Rite, Masonic Lodge and the American Legion.
He is survived by his daughter, Cherie D. Tolley of Columbia, SC; grandson, Brett W. Moore, Jr., and granddaughter-in-law, Dr. Sarah Moore of Charleston, SC; great-grandson, Grayson Felix Moore; sister-in-law, Ann Tolley of Myrtle Beach, SC; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Rymer, brothers, Ed Tolley, George Tolley and daughter-in-law, Melissa A. Turner.
