Walter Raymond Speelman

Walter Raymond Speelman, 89, of Isle Of Palms, South Carolina, husband of Ruth Mignon Docterman Speelman died Sunday, November 2, 2014. The relatives and friends of Walter R. Speelman are invited to attend his Memorial Service on Friday, November 7, 2014 in the J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 2:00 PM. Inurnment will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1303 Mathis Ferry Road.
Walter was born May 19, 1925 in Detroit, Michigan, son of the late Walter Raymond Speelman and the late Celina Dulong Speelman. He was barely 18 years old and drafted to fight in World War II in 1943 in the United States Army. He landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy shortly after D-Day, where his Battalion traveled across France to the Ardennes Forest Region of Belgium, to fight in the Battle of the Bulge. After the defeat of this battle, which was considered by many, as the turning point in WWII, his Battalion encountered a concentration camp where they were able to free hundreds of imprisoned American Soldiers, that had been left to die by the fleeing Germans. His service continued after the War, by volunteering with "The Red Ball Express" to help clean up the country.
When he returned home, he met the love of his life, Mignon Docterman, on a blind date in Detroit. He worked as a Truck Driver and was a member of the Teamsters for over 30 years. He retired and moved to the Isle of Palms, SC in 1997.
He was a member of the: V.F.W. Post 10624 in Mt. Pleasant, USS Yorktown CV-10 Association, Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, SC Chapter and Keen-agers on the Isle of Palms.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mignon Speelman of Isle of Palms, two sons, Gary Speelman and his wife, Cheryl, of Mount Pleasant, SC, and Mark Speelman of West Bloomfield, MI; one daughter, Nancy Darling of Crossville, TN; four grandchildren, Tiffany Suggs, Lisa Lazo, Trevor Speelman, and Melanie Speelman; and two great grandchildren, Grady Speelman and Thaddeus Suggs.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to V.F.W. Post 10624, 1411 Stuart Engals Blvd., Mount Pleasant, SC 29464.
