Walter Ervin Mitchell

February 4, 1918 — November 8, 2010

Walter Ervin Mitchell, 92, husband of the late Olga Bush Mitchell of Orlando, Florida passed away on Monday, November 8, 2010 in a local hospital. The relatives and friends of Walter E. Mitchell are invited to attend his Funeral Service on Saturday, November 13, 2010 in Great Hall Chapel, Washington Park North Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC.  MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. Mr. Mitchell was born on February 4, 1918 in Gary Indiana.  He was the son of the late Walter Cleveland Mitchell and Camile Celestine Fennell Mitchell.  In 1929, the family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. He attended Public School #50, Washington High School, and Perdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.  Walter was first employed at Central States Bridge Company and later by RCA in 1947 until they moved to New Jersey.  He then worked for Naval Ordnance, later called Naval Avionics Facilities, from 1947 to 1955. He then joined Allison, Division of General Motors Corporation till 1958.  In 1958, Walter worked for Chrysler Missile Corporation in Detroit Michigan until 1959 when he was hired by Detroit Transmission in Ypsilanti, Michigan until 1961.  In 1961, he joined Martin Marietta Corporation, Orlando, Florida until 1966 when he was hired by Boeing Corporation, Cape Canaveral, Florida.  When Boeing decided to move to Seattle, Washington, Walter left the company in 1971 to work for Florida Technological University, later called University of Central Florida. He retired from the University of Central Florida on June 30, 1998.  He attended First Baptist Church downtown in 1961, which was the first service being held in the new Sanctuary.  The family became members on May 9, 1965.  Water was active in the Royal Ambassadors for young boys. The family moved to the new church location at 33rd and McCloud in 1985 where he served as a Deacon Emeritus, Department Director, usher and greeter.  Some of Walter's hobbies included, landscape gardening, coin collecting, gourmet cooking and antiques. He is survived by his daughter, Sue Emma Mitchell, who is relocating from Charleston, SC to Valdosta, GA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Olga Bush Mitchell and three sisters, Priscilla Sherrick, Ann Streightoff and Betty Chapple.  In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to First Orlando Foundation, In Memory Of: Walter Mitchell, 3000 south John Young Parkway, Orlando, FL 32805 or East Cooper Baptist Church Mission fund, 361 Egypt Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC  29464.
