IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Walter Michael
Krouson
July 6, 1940 – March 22, 2026
Graveside Service
Walter Michael Krouson, 85, of North Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Patricia Coughlin Krouson, entered into eternal rest Sunday, March 22, 2026. His Graveside Service will be held Thursday, March 26, 2026 at the Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundary Street, at 1:00 pm. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel.
Walter was born July 6, 1940 in Boston, Massachusetts, son of the late Walter Krouson and Elaine Carmichael Krouson. He served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force, during which time he spent a year in Labrador sitting on the DEW Line (Distant Early Warning Line), a system of radar stations in the Arctic and Canada to detect incoming Soviet bombers during the Cold War and to provide early warnings to the Air Force. Wally also worked on early liquid propelled rockets and satellite programs at Vandenberg AFB, CA.
After graduating from UMASS with an electrician engineering degree, Wally began a 36 year career as a technical writer at General Electric Ordnance Systems in Pittsfield, MA, where he helped to create instructional manuals for the US Navy’s submarine fleet.
An avid Civil War buff, Wally visited numerous battle sites and monuments throughout the eastern theater of the war, with numerous trips to Gettysburg. He enjoyed over 40 years of traveling by car with his wife all around the US, visiting 47 of the mainland states and both coasts of Canada. Cape Breton Nova Scotia, where his mother was the 10th child born into a poor coal mining family, always held a special place in his heart. Wally celebrated his 85th birthday last year by spending 2 wonderful weeks in Nova Scotia attending numerous ceilidhs which included traditional Scottish music with lots of energy, laughter, and generations of family performers.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Daria Tansey of CA; sons, Kevin Krouson of Cheshire, MA, Ian Krouson and wife Sorally of RI; four grandchildren, Abby, Olivia, Aidan, and Ava; step-son, Patrick Farrell of Charleston, SC; along with Wally’s niece, Katie Mesler of Dalton, MA, with whom Wally shared a very special bond.
Memorials may be made to the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
