Walter Mark Douglas, 81, of Painted Post, New York, passed away on October 8, 2024. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Karen, his son Walter Mark, Jr. (Catherine) of Mt. Pleasant, SC and extended family Wanda Taylor of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Keith Lundy (Denise) of Goose Creek, SC, Foster Taylor, Stephanie Kennedy (Brian), Rachel Lundy, Layton Boals, and Pressley Boals.
He was educated by his beloved Jesuits at Campion High School and John Carroll University. He earned doctoral degrees at the University of Wisconsin/Madison (chemistry) and Chicago-Kent College of Law. He had a long and successful career as a research scientist and as an intellectual property lawyer.
Walter lived a life full of passion, dedication, and kindness, leaving behind a legacy cherished by family, friends, and all who knew him. An avid fisherman, Walter found peace and joy in nature, especially when walking his adored dog, Duke. Walter loved music and sang in several church choirs where his voice brought comfort and inspiration to many. He was deeply devoted to the Boy Scouts and, as a troop leader, he mentored his son and many young people embodying the values of leadership, service, and integrity.
Visitation with family and friends will be held at Stuhr’s in Mt. Pleasant, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road on Monday, October 14, from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. Funeral and inurnment services will be held for the family at Mepkin Abbey, 1098 Mepkin Abbey Road, Monck’s Corner on the morning of Wednesday, October 16.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Walter’s memory can be made to the Chemung County Humane Society & SPCA, Elmira, NY or to the National Shrine of St. Jude, Chicago, IL.
