Wallace "Rodney" Saunders, Sr.

Wallace “Rodney” Saunders, Sr., 92, of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Rodney was married to Margaret Florence Saunders for 63 wonderful years until her passing in 2017.

Rodney was born on September 27, 1930 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late Carlisle McKinley Saunders, Sr. and Clarentine “Setty” Wallace Saunders. He was a graduate of the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind in Spartanburg, SC. He began his 34 years with the Evening Post which he retired from in 1992. Rodney embraced numerous opportunities to support the deaf community throughout his adult life, and was selected to serve two years as Vice President and four years as the Treasurer of the SC Association of the Deaf, where he also served numerous years as a board member. He was also an active member of the SC Eastern Deaf Golf Association which he served as President and Vice President. He was in the golf hall of fame beginning in 2001. Rodney embraced a love for numerous sports, including golf, fishing, bowling and basketball. He will be remembered as a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, and a warmhearted supportive person, always there whenever a friend was in need.

Rodney is survived by his five children, daughter Susan “Sunny” Jewell and her husband, Steve of Lexington, SC, daughter Darla Iseman and her husband, Donald of Mt Pleasant, SC, daughter Rhonda Millard of Charleston, SC, son Wallace “Rod” R. Saunders Jr. and his wife, Star of Johns Island, and daughter Joy Broach of Charleston, SC; nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and several cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to SC Association of the Deaf, 437 Center St, West Columbia, SC 29169. Rodney's private funeral service will be held in Riverview Memorial Park Cemetery.
