Wallace "Buster" Godfrey Holland

Wallace "Buster" Godfrey Holland, 77, of Johns Island, South Carolina, husband of Elizabeth "Betty" McArver Holland, entered into eternal rest on Friday, March 27, 2026. His memorial service will be held Friday, April 10, 2026 in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel at 1:00 pm, and the family will receive friends immediately following.

Buster was born September 19, 1948 in Florence, South Carolina, son of the late Alexander Fredrick Holland, Jr. and Flora Smith Holland. Buster attended The Citadel on an athletic scholarship, where he played baseball for the legendary coach Chal Port. He graduated The Citadel in 1969. He and Betty married in 1971. Buster graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1972. He was inducted into The Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991.

Buster and his wife, Betty, moved to Charleston in 1972. He joined the law firm of Young Clement Rivers (now Clement Rivers, LLP) and became a partner within a few years. He practiced with the firm for his entire career, spanning more than 50 years. He focused his practice on Workers’ Compensation Defense and was deeply involved in the South Carolina Workers’ Compensation Bar. In the latter portion of his career her served as a mediator, often for Workers’ Compensation matters. He took pride in mentoring attorneys within and outside of the firm throughout his career.

When not working, Buster loved to be on the water, whether it be off-shore fishing chasing marlin or in a small boat on Jeffries Creek. He also loved to be in a deer stand or sitting in a blind waiting for duck and geese to fly by. Despite spending the majority of his life working on Broad Street in Charleston, he was the epitome of the saying, “You can take the boy out of the country, but you cannot take the country out of the boy.”

In addition to his wife, Buster is survived by his son, Wallace G. Holland, Jr. (Lindsay) of Truckee, CA; daughter, Catherine Holland Chase (Donald) of Johns Island, SC; brothers, Fred Holland (Helen) of Wadmalaw Island SC, Smitty Holland (Elaine) of Travelers Rest, SC, and John Holland (Annette) of Florence, SC; and grandchildren, William, Henry, and Emma Holland.
