W. Edmund Bates

Entered into eternal rest on the evening of January 21, 2011, W. Edmund Bates, Jr., widower of Alma Thompson Bates.  Residence, Charleston, SC.  The relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service at the Graveside, Monday, January 24, 2011 at 11:00 am, at Bethany Cemetery.  Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, Monday, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. 

Edmund was born on March 23, 1915 in Charleston, SC, the son of William Edmund Bates, Sr. and Louise Williams Bates.  He was a retired Planner and Estimator with the Charleston Naval Shipyard and a member of Asbury St. James United Methodist Church.  He was Past Master of Solomon's Lodge #1 A.F.M. and was affiliated with the Scottish Rite and Omar Shrine Temple. 

He is survived by one son:  William E. Bates, III and his wife Meredith of Charleston, SC; one daughter: Harriet B. Merkel of Summerville, SC; and 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
