Ginny was born on April 28, 1940, in Salisbury, Maryland, the daughter of the late Merritt Spencer Nelson and the late Elizabeth Herndon Hunt. She attended Peace College in Raleigh, North Carolina, and received her Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Ginny spent a short stint as an elementary school teacher in Boston, Massachusetts, before finding her greatest joy in raising her four children. She dedicated her life to her family as a devoted homemaker and the biggest cheerleader at her children’s sporting events, all while creating a warm and loving home for those she cherished. Ginny was an incredible role model and mentor to her children. She tirelessly volunteered for Meals on Wheels and cherished being a lifelong member of P.E.O.
Ginny was an active member of St. Andrew’s Church for over 15 years, where she received loving support from her church Life Group and “Empty Nesters,” and was known for hosting memorable Christmas parties. She delighted in creating mouth-watering meals, and her recipe box remains a culinary treasure. Ginny tirelessly tended her Lowcountry garden, kept all the birds fed, and fresh flowers brought her constant joy. She was an avid cross-stitcher whose beautiful handiwork reflected her patience, creativity and love. Her many cross-stitched creations will remain cherished reminders of her for years to come.
Ginny always made time for family and friends. She had a sweet spirit, a twinkle in her eye, and a smile that could brighten any room. She loved to laugh and brought joy to all those around her.
Virginia is survived by her son, John R. Tinnell Jr. of Charlotte, North Carolina; her daughters, Elizabeth Tinnell Schuh and her husband Dean of Johns Creek, Georgia, Virginia Mallard of Edisto Island, South Carolina, and Jennifer Tinnell of Tucker, Georgia; and her grandchildren, Bentley Olson Maxwell, Hunter Olson, Merritt Olson, and Robert R. Mallard III. She will be deeply missed by her family and all who knew and loved her.
