Virginia Lein Smith

Virginia Lein Smith, 96, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March, 24, 2025, with her loving family at her bedside. Virginia was welcomed with open arms by our Heavenly Father.

A Celebration of Virginia's life will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2025 at Ashley River Baptist Church, 1101 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC 29407. The family will receive friends at the church starting at 11:00 AM. The service will begin at 12:00 PM. Burial will follow the service at Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., West Ashley Chapel.

Virginia was born April 2, 1928 to William and Edna Godfrey Lein. Virginia, along with her three siblings, William J. [Bill], Lillian [Miller], and Paul, her twin, grew up in Brooklyn, NY.

Virginia met the love of her life, Luther Smith, in 1948. They married April 16, 1949, at East End Baptist Church, Brooklyn, NY. After they married, they moved to Charleston, SC where Luther was stationed in the United States Coast Guard.

Virginia was a faithful member of Ashley River Baptist Church for over 75 years.

After working forty years, Virginia retired from the Ashley River Baptist Church Child Development Center.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her siblings, her sons, Mathew “Matty,” Daniel “Danny,” and Stephen “Steve”; daughter-in-law June Smith and sons-in-law Austin Kohl, Don Schlag, Ralph Davis, and Robert “Bob” Heydrick; and grandson Jonathan Kennedy. To many, Virginia is also known as Mom, Grandma, Granny, Nanny, and Ginny.

Virginia is survived by her sister-in-law, Ellie Mae Lein; her four children: Janine Heydrick of Casselberry, FL, Rebecca Smith of North Charleston, SC, Paula Kennedy of North Charleston, SC, and Lillian Davis of North Charleston, SC; her grandchildren: Chrissty Harter, Stephen Smith [Kathy], Sherry Smith, Linda Brink [Stan], Haley Smith, Kendall Smith, Wayne Davis, and Nicholas Davis; great-grandchildren: Jessica [Patrick] Duncan, Dalton [Breanna] Burbage; Greyson Harter, Mackenzie Harter, Brian [Abbi] Mosley, Brandon [Ashley] Mosley, Brittany Hayes, Kayla Warner, Jason Warner, James Warner; great-great grandchildren: Sam Cooper-Alexander, Karliah Duncan, Harper Duncan, John Duncan, Chloe Burbage, Parker Burbage, Nathan Burbage, Madilyn Burbage; Emily Carpenter, Baron Mosley, Pierce Hayes, Jesse Walters; and her many nieces and nephews.

The family wants to thank everyone for their prayers, love, and support. Thank you especially to Paula, Becky, and Lutheran Hospice for the excellent, compassionate care.

Memorials in Virginia’s name may be made to the Music Department or Senior Citizens, Ashley River Baptist Church, 1101 Savannah Hwy, Charleston, SC 29407.
