Virginia Ethelyn Rowland

Virginia Ethelyn Rowland, 94, of Goose Creek, SC, died Thursday, March 31, 2011, in Heartland of Charleston.


Born June 3, 1916 in Owensboro, KY, she was one of two children of Newton Clifton Rowland and Sarah Deliah Heal Rowland.   Mrs. Rowland graduated from the College of Charleston in 1957 with a degree in English and History and taught second and third grade school children.  She worked for the Welfare Department for a number of years.  She received an Honorary Life Membership in the Presbyterian Women's group in 2003.  She was very active in the church with Missions, Vacation Bible School, singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school.  She was widely known as an artist having received ribbons and awards in the Charleston area for her portraits.  She and her late husband C.B. played golf, fished and played musical instruments.  They also owned and piloted a plane for several years.       


Mrs. Rowland is survived by one son, Kimbell E. Rowland and his wife Mel of North Charleston, SC; nine grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Coleman Burks Rowland; and son, Charles Rowland, daughter, Lynda R. Steger and sister, Helen S. Rowland.


The funeral service will be held in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road, Monday, April 4, 2011 at 11:00 AM.  Interment will follow in Carolina Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends in Stuhr's Northwoods Chapel Sunday, between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm.
