Virginia Joyce Ferguson Hunter, 82, of North Charleston, SC, died Tuesday, July 30, 2013, after a long illness. A Memorial Service will be held at Park Circle Presbyterian Church, 4701 Park Place West, North Charleston, on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at 2:00 pm. J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL is assisting the family.
Born September 26, 1930 in Spartanburg, SC, Virginia was the daughter of the late Richard Philip and Sara Willingham Ferguson. She was predeceased by her husband, Hugh Lamar Hunter, and her sister, Margaret F. Glover. Mrs. Hunter moved with her family to Charleston when she was ten years old. Already an accomplished dancer, she, with her sisters, performed for servicemen during World War II at USO's military hospitals, Camp Croft in Spartanburg, the Charleston Naval Shipyard, Eglin Field in Florida and for orphanage Christmas shows. Mrs. Hunter finished high school at age 16. She studied English, Journalism and Music at Limestone College and graduated in three years. Also, she was formally trained in voice and classical piano. She received her Teacher's Certification and began teaching at Chicora High School, her Alma Mater, when she was 19 years old. Years later, she taught at Garrett High School. In August 1982, she earned her Master of Arts Degree at Appalachian State University and she continued teaching for a total of 30 years.
Mrs. Hunter is survived by two sons, David Hunter of Columbia and Bryan Hunter of North Charleston; a sister, June F. Cochrane (husband Jack) of Florence; two nephews, Rick Glover (wife, Robin) of Powder Springs, GA and Michael Hopewell (wife, Beth) of Florence; two nieces, Susan Glover of North Charleston and Kim Velasquez of Florence; four grandnieces, three grandnephews and a close, longtime family friend, Gordon Ross of Columbia.
