Verlie Mae Varner, 94, of North Charleston, South Carolina, widow of Raymond Varner, died Friday, August 19, 2016. Her graveside service officiated by Rev. Daniel E. Johnston will be held Saturday, August 27, 2016 in the Rudd Branch Cemetery, Lebanon SC, at 12:00 pm. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., Northwoods Chapel.
Verlie, one of nine children, was born August 21, 1921 in Lake City, SC, to the late Benjamin Powell and the late Ellen Lee Powell. During World War II she was a Rosie Riveter. She had worked as a seamstress at Levi Strauss. She was also very active in First Baptist Church of North Charleston where she taught Sunday School and worked in the daycare.
She is survived by her son, Kenneth Varner (Sharon) of Anderson, SC; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of North Charleston, 4217 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29405.
