Vera Maria Schelansky

Vera Maria Schelansky passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2017 in Mount Pleasant, SC.

Vera was born on July 13, 1930, in Berlin, Germany. She was raised by her mother, Elisabeth Schubert Schelansky and her grandmother, Marie Schubert. She was a child during WWII. After the war, Vera, along with her mother, brother, and grandmother traveled to the US aboard the SS Marine Swallow (United States Lines) September 11, 1948 to start a new life in the United States. She and her family became US citizens November 11, 1954. Vera worked for the German Consulate General in New York City in 1951. She later was employed with Ask Mr. Foster Travel Service, Inc., 30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, NY until 1962. After the death of her mother in 1962, Vera and her grandmother returned to Munich, Germany where Vera started her lifelong career with MEA (Middle East Airlines) until she retired December 1995. Vera embraced the opportunity to travel the world enjoying trips to exotic destinations. She returned to the United States in 2008 residing in Mount Pleasant, SC until her death. She was a member of Christ Our King Catholic Church. Her passion was travel; she also enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, watching CNN, and giving gifts. She was an avid storyteller, always generous, and kind to everyone.

Vera is survived by her brother, Peter Paul Erich (Elizabeth) of Mount Pleasant, SC; her niece, Lisa Erich Nuzum (Stan), of Mount Pleasant, SC; her nephew, Mark Erich, MD (Debbie), of McClellanville, SC; Michael Schubert (Gisela) and family of Dusseldorf, Germany; Karen Weiser of Munich, Germany; four great nieces and one great nephew; and many colleagues, friends, and devoted caregivers.

Her Funeral Mass will be held at Christ Our King Catholic Church at a later date when the family can all be together.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Our King Catholic Church, 1149 Russell Drive, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464.
