Vera Hucks D'Amato, 97, of Summerville, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Thursday, August 6, 2026.

Vera was born February 4, 1929, in Horry County, South Carolina, daughter of the late Edward Leo Hucks and the late Eva Allen Hucks. She was a Switchboard Operator for The Coastal Center.

Vera was a woman of remarkable creativity, talent, and determination. She had a true gift for sewing and could create, repair, alter, and remodel almost anything. She made clothing for her children, grandchildren, and others, as well as beautiful drapes and curtains for homes. She also made handmade quilts for all three of her children and each of her three grandchildren-gifts that will be treasured for generations. Her creativity extended into decorating, where she had a natural eye for making spaces warm and inviting. She even made five sets of hand-embroidered pillowcases, one for each of her great-grandchildren, a beautiful reminder that she expressed her love through the things she created with her own hands.

She enjoyed gardening and took pride in working with her hands. She was comfortable using carpentry tools and had the ability to figure out how to build, repair, or improve things on her own. Her independence, resourcefulness, and willingness to tackle any challenge were qualities that defined her throughout her life.

She was an outspoken and generous woman with a strong spirit who lived life on her own terms. She loved her family deeply and was lovingly known as “Granny” by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She shared her many talents, creativity, wisdom, and love with those around her. She will be remembered for her determination, her caring heart, and the countless things she created - both with her hands and through the love she gave to her family.

She is survived by her two daughters, Diane Marr (Ray) of Oriental, NC, and Donna Bohannon (Robert) of Bonneau, SC; her son, Carmine Thomas D'Amato, Jr. (Teresa) of Ladson, SC; her sister, Jo Nell Hucks Smith of Parksley, Virginia; her grandchildren, Brandon Bohannon of Eugene, Oregon, Christopher Marr of New Bern, NC, and Sarah Marr Lee (Peter) of Havelock, NC; and five great-grandchildren, three in Myrtle Creek, Oregon and two in Havelock, NC.

She was preceded in death by her father, Edward Leo Hucks; her mother, Eva Allen Hucks; her husband, Carmine Thomas D'Amato, Sr.; her sisters, Margaret Hucks Larimore and Carol Hucks Libiszweski; and her brother, Robert W. Hucks.
