Upon graduation from high school, he entered The Citadel where he excelled in the Citadel Regimental Band. He also was a member of the 1962 Sword Drill and 1963 member of the Summer Guards as well as the Shako Editor in Chief.

Truman received a Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam in 1966-1967. While in the Air Force Reserves, he received Major Below the Zone in the work he did in the 1982 Grenada Invasion. While in the reserves he was on flight status and served as a Service Core officer.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mary Lois Etheredge Kemp; his children who live in California: Kelly Morehead (Michael), Kurt Kemp (Stephanie) and Trey Ames (Carrie), and 10 grandchildren: Samson, Scarlett, Sofeya, Ivy, Spencer, Rhys, Teagan, Daisy, Rose, Lily.
