Tommy was born April 14, 1947 in Orangeburg, South Carolina, son of the late Ronald Milford Boals, Sr. and the late Louise Bessinger Boals. Tommy started the family business, Mt. Pleasant Tree Service in 1976, and retired in 2020 after 43 years of building a flawless reputation for professionalism and affordability. The landscape and history of the Lowcountry would not be the same without the image of Tommy driving his blue tractor all around Shem Creek, working hard to beautify the grounds of the neighboring businesses. Tommy left a final message for all of us who knew and loved him, "Just because I'm gone, doesn't mean you can drive on my grass." He enjoyed classic cars, collectibles, and most of all his family.
He is survived by his spouse of 29 years, Karen Boals of Wando, SC; children, Tara Brown (Ty) of Winston-Salem, NC, Tommy Ray Boals, Jr. of Mount Pleasant, SC, Jason Aaron Boals (Lauren) of Mount Pleasant, SC, Jason Barley (Clancie) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Josh Barley (Chrystal) of Columbia SC and Ashley Truitt (Matt) of Lexington, NC; and his brother Ronnie Boals, Jr. of Mt . Pleasant; and ten grandchildren, Emma and Jacob Brown, Layton and Pressley Boals, Baker and Bennett Barley, Dylan and Landon Barley, and Whitley and Waylon Truitt.
He is preceded in death by his sister Dyanne Whitton.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
